Vernon Anton Teply, Sr. died October 29, 2022, of bone cancer stemming from prostate cancer in remission for decades. He was lovingly cared for by his daughter through Hyland Crossing Memory Care, and Heartland Hospice in Sun Prairie, WI. The Veterans Administration provided excellent health care in Madison, WI, and Omaha, NE. While in Omaha, family supported him in many devoted ways.
Vern was born in Clarkson, (Sarpy County) Nebraska on March 26, 1922, to Anton F. Teply, who immigrated with his parents Josef and Anna from Pusta Rybna, Czechoslovakia to Racine County, Wisconsin in 1903; and Mary (Lukl) Teply, who was born to parents homesteading in Clarkson, Nebraska since 1876. The Lukl family also immigrated from Czechoslovakia; Jan in 1876 from Nosislav and Marie (Bukacek) in 1882 from Sirakov. Members of the family still farm the original homestead.
Vern graduated from Clarkson High School in 1940, and the War Department’s Technical School in Bellevue, Nebraska in 1942. Then, he served his country in war efforts at home until April 1943; later, inducted into the Army Americal Division for active WWII duty in 1944. At home, after active military reserve, he was recalled by the 5th Calvary Infantry Division, Regimental Combat Team in 1950, for the Korean Conflict until 1951.
In 1944 his active military service was in Australia, New Caledonia, Japan, plus his Pacific action most notably included the nation states of Solomon (Guadalcanal), New Guinea (Bougainville), and Philippine (Cebu and Leyte) Islands earning him the Division’s Bronze Star. Altogether he holds nine service metals. Proudly he maintains life membership in American Legion Post 331, VFW Post 2704, and Fraternal Order of Eagles (#38).
Vern’s business career covers construction, mechanical, engineering, and building operation management. He holds certification as: First Grade Stationary Engineer, refrigeration, power, and lightening; retiring as building superintendent of Farm Credit Land Bank, District Eight complex.
Vern loved his Czech heritage by speaking, reading, and writing Czech. Proudly maintaining membership in SOKOL South Omaha since 1972. Polka music and dancing brought many friends, travel, heritage celebrations, and an extensive collection of recordings. He toured Czechoslovakia in 2003.
Vern is survived by his daughter Helen (Herbert) Malzacher, stepson James (Georgia) Hovorka, and stepdaughter Terri (Joseph) Chalen. Granddaughters Kristen (William) Grider, and Michelle Randall. Two great grandsons Greyson and Breck Grider, five step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, and nephews James (Linda) Tullous and John (Sondra) Tullous.
Vern was preceded in death by wives Marie (Cermak) Teply in 1978 and Mayme (Hovorka) Teply in 2017; and son Vernon Teply Jr. in 2013. His sister Ruby Tullous died in 1985 after her husband’s James in 1980 and Emil Sindelar (WWII pilot) in 1943.

Visitation with refreshments begins Friday, November 11, 2022, from 4 to 7 PM, with visitation and chapel service Saturday, November 12, from 10 AM to noon at the mortuary. Thereafter, interment is at Bohemian National Cemetery on Center ST.
