Rudolph “Rudy” Suchomel, age 97, died on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at The William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital in Madison. He was born on February 23, 1919 in Sun Prairie, and was the son of Vincent and Mathilda (Benisch) Suchomel. He married Janet Weisman on June 4, 1946 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Rudy grew up on the family farm in Sun Prairie until he got drafted in 1941. He served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Rudy was part of the invasion force on D-Day and received the Purple Heart for his service. Rudy worked at A.J. Roob and Prairie Plumbing and Heating for 35 years. Rudy's passion was fastpitch softball, he played for 64 years. They nicknamed him “Fireball” and he had more than 1000 pitching wins, 35 no-hitters and 4 perfect games. In 1968 he allowed only 2 earned runs in 161 innings for a 0.09 ERA. Rudy was inducted into the Wisconsin A.S.A. Hall of Fame on October 14, 1989.
He is survived by his wife Janet; his children, Rudy (Sandy) of Pardeeville, John, Sun Prairie, Bonnie (Dennis) Nagel, Sun Prairie, Rick (Debbie), Madison; grandchildren Bradley, Rhonda, Nick, Mike, Lisa, Kelly, Tina and Barry; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 brother Vernon (Carol), Sun Prairie; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Julie; son Fritz; his parents; daughter-in-law Cindy; grandsons, John Jr., Joe and Tim; 6 brothers; and 5 sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 2420 St. Albert Drive in Sun Prairie. Monsignor Donald Heiar and Monsignor Terrance Connors will concelebrate. Burial will be in Sacred Hearts Cemetery where graveside military rites will be held. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Thursday.
