Roderick B. Freidel, age 82, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Prairie Gardens in Sun Prairie. He was born on July 29, 1930 in Madison and was the son of William and Helen (Gugel) Freidel. Rod graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 spending most of his time in Naples, Italy aboard the U.S.S. Adirondack. On October 29, 1955 he married Carol Richgels at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Madison. Rod was a sales representative for Continental Coffee and Madison Foods. He was later employed by Wisconsin Porcelain Company until he retired in 1993. Rod enjoyed traveling and gardening and sharing the fruits and vegetables he had grown until Parkinson's made it impossible for him to continue to care for his garden. He was very proud of his family and they were a source of great comfort and happiness to him.
Rod is survived by his wife, Carol; a son Rod (Majka) and 3 grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacqueline and Robert of Byron, IL. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Catherine Larson of Madison, Alice Wright of Spokane, WA and Betty Stuckmayer of Minneapolis, MN; a sister-in-law Ilene Freidel of Sun Prairie; a brother-in-law Leonard Welker of Sun Prairie and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother Rodney; brother; Donald, Leroy; sisters, Bernice Welker and Gwen Ellis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie. Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt will preside. Entombment will be at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens where graveside military rites will be held. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
