Reuben A. Birrenkott, age 86, passed away on Wed., Nov. 26, 2014, at home after a valiant battle with lung cancer. He was born on Aug. 14, 1928, in Cross Plains, WI, and was the son of Verner and Eleanore (Marking) Birrenkott. He married Magdalen Barman on April 8, 1953, at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church in Sun Prairie. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, he was a chief radio operator and commander's driver. Reuben worked as an electrician for Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods for 44 years. He and his loving wife Maggie lived on and worked the farm for nearly 60 years. Reuben was an avid outdoorsman and one of the founders of the North Bristol Sportsman's Club, and a member of St. Joseph's Parish of East Bristol. He taught his children the value of family and friends, hard work, faith – balanced with fun and humor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Maggie; his 7 children, Patricia Czesnakowicz of Orlando, FL, Daniel (Connie) Birrenkott of Waunakee, Joyce (Paul Heidemann, special friend) Hastings of Cottage Grove, Joann (Bradley) Barquest of Coon Rapids, MN, Jean Mohr of Sun Prairie, Linda (Steven) Damm of Columbus, Karen (Timothy Gunden, special friend) Birrenkott of Monona; 14 grandchildren, Anna Czesnakowicz, Jennifer (Andrew) Aslesen, Travis (Teri) Romens, John Romens, Aaron Hastings, Seth Hastings, Emilie Heidemann, Ethan Barquest, Elliot Barquest, Calvin Mohr, Weston Mohr, Garrett Mohr, Jacob Damm, Danielle Damm; 5 great grandchildren, Cali and Talia Aslesen, Cody, Reese and Talan Romens; a sister, Ruth Pertzborn of Cottage Grove, a brother, Robert (Rochelle) Birrenkott of Ridgeway, a brother-in-law George (Jakey Giddens) Barman of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law David Pertzborn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Mon., Dec. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Bristol, 1935 County Hwy. V, Sun Prairie. Fr. Robert Butz will preside. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sun., Nov. 30, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Bristol Sportsman's Club or St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
