Ralph Arnold Vernig, age 84, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 at home among family. He was born August 25th, 1932 in Sun Prairie, the fourth child of nine to Carl and Mabel (Hoepker) Vernig. He lived the majority of his life on the Vernig Homestead across from Angel Park Speedway. Ralph attended Sacred Hearts School. Charlotte Annen won his heart and they married on April 21, 1951 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cottage Grove. They were married for 61 years until they were separated by Charlotte's death in 2013. Together they raised four children Judy (Mike) Pitzo, Linda (Bill) Wangerin, Diane (Tim) Tucker, and Ralph Jr. (Vicki) Vernig. They were blessed with nine grandchildren: Wendi (Mike) Tavs, Mark (Jenny) Pitzo, Liz (Rob) Nelson, Will (Erin) Wangerin, Dustin Wangerin, Natasha (Steve) Jones, Behren (Tonia) Tucker, Laura Herman and Michael Wieneke; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Andrew, Cecelia, Michael, Matthew, Jasmine, RJ, Hunter, Emma, Lucas, Shae, Liam, Finley, Charlotte, Emberly and Gracie. He spent 43 years employed at Oscar Meyer. Ralph also farmed with his father. Friends and family will remember him as a gentle man and loving father who enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He is survived by three siblings Loretta (James) Bakken, Marlin (Sandra) Vernig, and Doris (Jaime) Pena; sister-in-law Phyllis Weidephul; In-laws Matt's Mary Ann Annen, Agnes Auby, Thecla Breunig, Elaine (Ralph) Breunig, John Annen, Otto (Delores) Annen, Mary Ann Annen, and David Annen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Elaine (Victor) Krueger, Mary (Elmer) Haefner, Leslie Vernig, Harold Vernig, and Carol (John) Haefner; in-laws Matthew Annen and Daryl Auby.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday June 9, 2017, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus St., Sun Prairie, Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt will preside. A visitation will be held on Thursday June 8, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. to at Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. A scripture service will be held at 7 p.m on Thursday. Burial will take place in Sun Prairie Memory Garden.
