Norman “Shorty” Lukes, age 87 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at the Columbus Nursing Home. He was born on March 5, 1924 in the Town of Sun Prairie. He was the son of Joseph and Theresa (Breunig) Lukes. He married Audrey Tuschen on October 2, 1948. Shorty served in the military during the occupation of Japan as well as the Korean War. Upon return to civilian life, he worked for the Dane County Highway Department until he was stricken with polio in 1955. He then courageously returned to school where he became a certified draftsman employed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation until retiring in 1986. Shorty was an active member of Sacred Hearts Parish, the Catholic Order of Foresters, The American Legion Post #333 and the Knights of Columbus. After retiring he enjoyed vacationing, playing cards, swimming, watching sports, restoring his antique cars, attending family functions and volunteering.
He is survived by his wife Audrey of 63 years; his 2 loving daughters, Alexis “Lexy” and Kay along with in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends who have become part of our extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012 at Sacred Hearts Catholic of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie. Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt will preside. Burial will be held at Sacred Hearts Cemetery where graveside military rites will be held. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church in Sun Prairie and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday. A scripture service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. A special thanks to Monsignor Duane, Father John, Dr. Paul Schmidt, Marti Buss and the wonderful loving staff at the Columbus Nursing Home along with all the individuals who provided support throughout the years.
