Naoma Eleanor Lyster, age 89, passed away at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge on Friday, March 27, 2015. She was born on July 5, 1925, in Mt. Tabor, Wisconsin. The beloved daughter of Frank and Elva (Calhoun) Hudovernik and dear sister of Phyllis, Glaires, and Nonavee, she kept a special place in her heart for the rugged hills and valleys of her childhood home in Vernon County. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended the University of Wisconsin—Madison. On February 27 , 1954, she married Norman Lyster and moved to his family home on South Street in Sun Prairie, where she lived for sixty years.
After her husband's death in 1967, Naoma continued to raise their four young children with faith, courage, and kindness. The rock of the Lyster family, Naoma is survived by Kathryn (Greg Anderson) of Monona, Richard (Kati) of Cross Plains, Barbara Anders (Stuart) of Sun Prairie, and Gregory (Julie) of Brookfield WI. She also leaves behind eight adored grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special sister-in-law, Edna Lyster, of Sun Prairie
Naoma's most precious things in life were her faith, home, garden, books, and family—including her dogs– and especially her grandchildren. Grammy was a loving and magical grandmother to Caitlin, Thomas, and Hannah Moodie; Rita and Hayden Anderson; and Quinn, Olivia, and Keith Lyster–who will hold her memory fast and dear and continue her legacy of love.
Naoma had a long career with the Sun Prairie School District; she worked in the elementary school libraries where she met many life-long friends and was well-respected for her work ethic, skill in cataloging books, and knowledge of children's literature and the Dewey Decimal System.
Memorials in Naoma's name may be made to Sacred Hearts School Library or Olbrich Botanical Gardens Her family is grateful for the exceptional and skilled staff at Oakwood and Agrace HospiceCare . Thanks also to the physicians who treated Naoma with great skill and compassion during her illnesses. Special gratitude to Ann Terrill for her spiritual support and friendship.
A visitation will be held Monday, March 30, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St., Sun Prairie. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street, Sun Prairie, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, with Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt officiating. Private burial service will be at Sacred Hearts Cemetery. Naoma's family invites members of her fan club to gather in the church basement after Mass for lunch and sharing of fond memories and good company.
