Margaret (Elaine) Dunn, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. She was born on March 13, 1919 in New London, Wisconsin to Frank and Molly (Ahearn) Allen. She graduated from New London High School in 1936. She then attended Outagamie County Teachers Normal College in 1937 and taught in country schools for six years. She moved to Madison in 1943 and like many women during World War II she went to work for Rayovac to support the war effort. She met the love of her life, Bernard (Bernie) Dunn, on a blind date arranged by his brother. Elaine's beauty and charm captured his heart and the couple was married on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1946, at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in New London. They moved to Sun Prairie where Bernie was employed as a teacher and principal. The couple had two sons, Daniel Patrick and David Michael, and together they dedicated themselves to raising a family and participating in community activities and events. Elaine worked for Dr. Frank Baldwin and George & Ed Electric. She also attended Cosmetology School, obtained her license, and enjoyed using those skills throughout her life. Elaine was a devoted member of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, and the V.F.W. Post 9362 Auxiliary, where she served as President. She was an excellent bridge player and belonged to her bridge club for over 50 years. In addition, Elaine was a 20 year volunteer tour guide for the Governor's Mansion. Bernie and Elaine enjoyed traveling and their ongoing participation in various dance clubs. After Bernie passed away in 2005, Elaine enjoyed discussing politics and current events, reading countless books, watching the Packers, spending time with her family and friends, and hugging her darling great grandsons. Survivors include her sons, Daniel (Rhonda) Dunn and David Dunn (friend Peg), granddaughter Kelly (Zach) Severson, and great grandsons Parker and Nolen Severson. She is also survived by her siblings, Father Richard Allen, John (Jean) Allen, Alice Burton, Sara Jane Allen, and family friend Betty Putnam. She was predeceased by her husband Bernie, her parents and seven siblings. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Agrace Hospice staff and the staff of Prairie Gardens Assisted Living where Elaine has resided for the past 6 years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 28, 2015 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street, Sun Prairie with Father Richard Allen presiding. Burial will be at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Tuschen Newcomer Funeral home on Sunday, September 27, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Monday. Family and friends are invited to lunch following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Hearts Church .
Let's smile because she lived, not cry because she is gone. We love you and will miss you.
