Leon F. “Speedy” Derr, age 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison surrounded by his family. He was born on August 23, 1930 in the Town of Bristol and was the son of William and Eleanor (Fox) Derr. Leon was a lifelong resident of Sun Prairie. He graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1947. He lived his entire life on the family farm. Leon was a very skilled carpenter and was the first person family and friends called for their projects. He worked as a foreman for Construction Concepts Inc. for many years and retired in 1995. After retirement he enjoyed tinkering around in his shop, gambling and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna; a son Jeff; daughters, Christine (Jason) Jensen, Stephanie (Lance) Massie; 6 beloved grandchildren, Brittany and Larissa Derr, Morgan and Taylor Jensen, Dylan and Zach Massie; a sister, Elaine (Bob) Seltzner and many friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Reuben, Ralph, Lester, Paul, Stanley; a sister Aroline Connor and an infant brother, Leo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie. Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt will preside. Burial will be in the Sweet Cemetery in the Town of Bristol. A visitation will be held (today) from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. The family would like to thank the staff on 2nd and 4th floors at St. Mary's Hospital for their compassionate care. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a charity of their choice.
