Helena K. Hockel, 90, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 after a long struggle with Parkinson' s disease.
The eldest of six children, Helena, was born at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa on March 12, 1923, to Harm and Harminnie DeWall and was raised on the family farm in Pocahontas County. She attended Country School and Tobin Business College, where she met Orville Hockel. They were married on June 10, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church, Lizard Township, Palmer, Iowa. After marriage, Helena dedicated her life to taking care of their four children and Orville, until his death on October 24, 1998.
Helena was a quiet, unassuming woman who possessed an unwavering faith in God, a strong belief in hard work, education and the importance of family. She was a loving and selfless caregiver who taught by example. During her illness, she demonstrated an amazing dignity and grace.
As a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, she was active in the church until moving to Sauk Rapids, Minnesota in June 2009. She resided there until January 28, 2014 when she moved to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, but home was always Fort Dodge.
Surviving are her four children: Linda Foust, Boulder, CO; Maryellen (Tom) McDonnell, Sun Prairie, WI; Nancy Kubasek, Sauk Rapids, MN; Brian Hockel (Pat Pijar), Hurst, TX, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Brittany Foust, Boulder, CO; Elana Foust, Ithaca, NY; Anneliese Foust, Chevy Chase, MD; Greg (Alison) McDonnell & son Owen, Eden Prairie, MN; Tamara (Ben) Graf & son Bridger, River Falls, WI; Matthew (Trisha) Kubasek & sons Austin and Camron, Sauk Rapids, MN; Andrew Kubasek, Sauk Rapids, MN; Ben Hockel, Fort Worth, TX, and Eric Hockel, Hurst,TX. Also surviving are three brothers: Robert (Myrna) DeWall, Pocahontas, IA; Herman (Belle) DeWall, Gilmore City, IA and Marvin (Shirley) DeWall, Palmer, IA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Helena in death were parents: Harm and Minnie DeWall, husband: Orville Hockel, brother: Alfred DeWall, sister: Margaret Freeburg and son-in-law: Bohuslav Kubasek.
A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on
April 5, 2014.
Helena's family wishes to extend gratitude for the visits, cards and prayers of family and friends and for the caregivers who assisted her during the last years of her life.
