George B. Weisensel, age 88, died on May 31, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in 1927 in Sun Prairie, the son of Leo and Catherine Weisensel. He attended Sacred Hearts grade school in Sun Prairie, and Sun Prairie High School, and completed welding and advanced welding courses at Madison Vocational and Adult Education School. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a motor transport mechanic. He was an avid motorcyclist in his younger days, and enjoyed riding both on and off the road. He especially liked to compete in hill climbing events, and did so with some success.
George was united in marriage with Irene Pogue on August 2, 1958 at Sacred Hearts church in Sun Prairie. She was the sister on one of his motorcycling buddies. George and Irene farmed with his brother Vernon on their mother's farm for a few years and then bought their own little place. They raised vegetables and berries, rabbits and goats. Eventually they started a commercial goat dairy. During this time, George was also putting in long hours as a John Deere tractor mechanic for Farmers Implement in Madison where he spent nearly 27 years. George and Irene enjoyed driving trips and drove to Fairbanks Alaska twice, out west to California, east to the Atlantic Ocean, and south to the Gulf of Mexico.
George is survived by his wife Irene and their eleven children – Peggy (Darrah) Chavey in Beloit, Rebecca (Brian) Strang in Madison, Phyllis (Eric) Stoltz in Sun Prairie, Bruce (Patty) in Neenah, Natalie (Noah) Bledstein in Wales WI, Arlene (Brent) Danz in Madison, Lisa (Bob) Nesson in Sun Prairie, Joe (Melodi Mari) in Sun Prairie, David (Lara) in Fairbanks AK, Jill (Andy) Rahn in Madison, and Tina (Dan) Evans in Wisconsin Dells as well as 29 grandchildren plus two expected this summer, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Marion (Fred) Gmeinder and Rita Richolson and a sister-in-law Billie Weisensel.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Edna, Gladys and Audrey, his brothers Elmer, Leon, Myron and Vernon, sisters-in-law Marcella, Mary and Olive, and brothers-in-law LaVerne Coughlin, Reggie Flannery, Lester Winkelman, Frank Powers, and Ron Richolson.
All are welcome for a visitation from 9:00 to 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 4 at Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home at 302 Columbus St in Sun Prairie. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. across the street at Sacred Hearts Church. Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt will preside. Burial will be in the Sacred Hearts cemetery with a luncheon to follow in the church hall.
