Garland “Gary” Quamme, age 78, died on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at her home in Sun Prairie. She was born July 16, 1935, the daughter of Laurence and Gertrude (Beers) Gaumitz. Gary was united in marriage to Russell J. Quamme Jr. on December 18, 1954 at Spring Prairie Lutheran Church.
Gary served on several City of Sun Prairie boards and commissions including President of Sun Prairie City Cemetery Association, the Library Board, Museum Board, and her favorite, Saving the Columbus Street Water Tower Board. She was an election poll worker for 42 years beginning in 1968. Gary was also a member of the former Twentieth Century Club, Friends of the Library, Sun Prairie Historical Society and Sun Prairie Historical Restorations.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild: Kym (Jim) Husom of Middleton and their children, Holly (Sam) Crone and grandson Graeme of Minneapolis, MN and Ryan (Ella) Husom of Madison; Kevyn of Sun Prairie and his children, Travis (Sarah) of Albuquerque, NM and Kurtis of Milwaukee; Ty (Maria) of Poynette and their son, Cole of Milwaukee; Heath (Janet) and their son Chase of Middleton; GiGi (Bruce) Bedner and their twin daughters, Bridget and Gretchen of Columbus; step-grandchildren, Geoffrey (Christina) Hauge and Lydia Meier. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant granddaughter Avery Quamme.
Memorial services will be held at United Methodist Church of Sun Prairie, 702 North Street, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Amanda Stein presiding. A visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday. A private family burial will be held. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sun Prairie Historical Society, Sun Prairie United Methodist Church, or Agrace HospiceCare Inc.

Gary and I spent time doing genealogy on the Smith Family with Pat Beers Skaros, from Milwaukee. We treasured the same roots. I wrote a book: 19th Century Wisconsin Writer: Mary Ellen Beardsley Smith "Aunt Prue", we shared that Great Grandmother, as our Grandmothers Theda and Adaline Smith were sisters.: The last time I shared time with Gary was a couple of years ago, when I did a presentation in the Sun Prairie Library on the book and genealogy. We had a special bond and the furniture in her home took me back to the days of visiting Great Uncle and Aunt (Ed and Effie)...sending my love to my cousin's family, who's mother had a passion for her roots too!
