Ernest M. Skalitzky age 75, died on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at the Lighthouse in Sun Prairie after a lengthy illness. He was born on December 30, 1940 to Valentine and Gertrude (Goff) Skalitzky in Watertown. He was raised in Waterloo, WI with sisters Rachel and Barbara who are deceased. Growing up Ernie was an avid rifle and pistol sharpshooter, and active in the Waterloo High School Football Squad. In 1962 he met and married Betty Campbell from Madison, they resided in Waterloo and both worked in Madison, he as an auto mechanic. They moved to Madison, then Sun Prairie. In the early 70's Ernie and Betty owned and operated an RV sales and repair business, which son Scott took over. They retired to Florida, where they were for about 18 years. During which time Ernie and Betty traveled all over the United States, living in a large motor home and worked on the road selling large motor homes. In the early times of over the road travel, his CB handle was the “Silver Flash” because he drove his favorite car, a silver Mark III.
In Florida Ernie had the gift of “gab” and with a focused dedication thus he became a real estate broker, known as the guy who could sell “Ice boxes to Eskimos”. Very Successful at that until again retiring and moving to South Carolina with wife Betty where they lived in a 1916 plantation home that they shared with friends, family, etc. There Ernie was nicknamed “The Energizer Bunny”, always doing some kind project on the property.
Ernie was a multifaceted kind of guy. He enjoyed football, travel, fine dining, dancing the waltz, polka and the twist to Chubby Checkers and Elvis Presley. He also enjoyed dancing to his favorite music “proud Mary”. In fact Betty and Ernie met dancing 55 years ago.
He is survived by his wife Betty: sons Marcus (Kenosha) and Scott (Jenelle); daughter Deborah (Skalitzky) Kelly; grandchildren Skyler Skalitzky, Ashley Skalitzky, Antonia Caldwell and Jacob Kelly.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister's Rachel Skalitzky and Barbara Skalitzky.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie with Father Chahm Ghang presiding. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie, and from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the Church on Wednesday.
