Eleonora Alksnis, aka “Grandma” to all those that spent time with her at her WI home, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday evening, September 2. She was born May 19, 1908 and raised in Riga, Latvia. There she married Haralds Alksnis and had two girls, Aija Grinbergs (NY) and Mara Boedefeld (IL). During WWII Grandma lost her beloved husband. She traveled across countries, making her way to the United States with her friend, her two girls and had a son, John Alksnis (NY) during her travels. She worked as a nurse at numerous refugee camps and learned to speak five languages. She continued her nursing career in NY, where she lived for many years alongside her loving NY family. For the last six years she lived in the home of her grandson Jon Boedefeld and family. She was truly an inspiration and loved with her whole heart. Her children, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and several relatives in Latvia will hold her memory dear. There will be an open house on Saturday, September 20, 4-6pm, at the Boedefeld family home in honor of her memory. 542 Milwaukee Ave, Waterloo, WI.
