Edwin R. Baerwolf, age 82, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2015 on the farm that he loved and had lived on for over 70 years. Ed was born on January 16, 1933, to Edward and Florence Baerwolf of Poynette and moved to his home farm in Columbus when he was 13. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1951. On Sept. 12, 1953, he married Mary M. Morgan and took over the family dairy farm north of North Bristol where he remained for the rest of his life. Ed never really retired from farming, choosing instead to make sure that his two youngest sons knew the “right” way to do things and providing plenty of help, advice, and oversight right up until his death.
Ed and Mary built a very successful dairy farm operation, Blue Chip Farms, and had the vision to see the future in organic dairy farming, encouraging and supporting their sons to grow into Sassy Cow. Ed loved to ride all over the farms on his gator and took special joy in giving his grandchildren and great grandchildren rides down the “big hill.”
Ed was father to six children, sadly losing his son David in 1972, and lived among all of them within a few short miles and fences. We know that Dad's spirit remains over the fields and barns that he knew so well.
He is survived by three sons, Edwin (Velery) Baerwolf, James (Jenny) Baerwolf, and Robert (Jenny) Baerwolf, and two daughters, Linda (Ric) Choudoir, and Connie (Ted) Valenza, 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Sheila Etheridge. He is also survived by his companion in the later years, Kathy Longseth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Alice, his son, David and his grandson, David.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Bristol, with Father Vince Brewer presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St., Sun Prairie, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, the family will be donating to youth agriculture programs.
