David Newell Thompson, Sr., age 52 of Madison, died on April 26, 2016 while vacationing in Jamaica with good friends. Dave suffered a stroke, and subsequent heart attack. Efforts to airlift him back to the U.S were unsuccessful.
Dave, the son of Newell James Thompson and Anna (Shepherd) Thompson, was born on April 13, 1964 in Beloit. He attended grade school in Orfordville, middle school in Dodgeville, and graduated from high school in Stoughton in 1982, where he led the Marching Band. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1984, where he was stationed in San Diego, served honorably aboard the USS Ranger, was awarded numerous accommodations including the highly valued Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He graduated from Upper Iowa University, and worked as a business systems consultant for Fischer Scientific.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his son, David Thompson, Jr., of Oregon. He is further survived by his brothers, Loren (Sue) Thompson of Reeds Spring, MO, Dr. Tom (Melissa) Thompson of Monroe, and sisters, Barbara McMillin of Duluth, MN, Laura (Robert) Kiefert of Green Bay, and Kathy (David) Meyer of Evansville, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dave had a wonderful sense of humor and was known amongst his family and friends as a terrific guy. He will be missed by all who loved him. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Special Olympics.
