DeForest———Arthur K. Paulman, Jr., age 88, passed away quietly at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Art was a soft spoken, warm, loving man who rarely ever took God’s name in vain.
Old School, Art was born on the homestead in Windsor Township, April 4, 1936 to Arthur K Sr. and Carrie (Midthun) Paulman. Growing up on a dairy farm, he attended North Bristol grade school. Bristol Lutheran church was his home congregation where he was baptized and confirmed. He graduated DeForest High School in 1953 where he played football, baseball and was the Junior Prom King.
Art married Elaine Kvalheim and they had a son, Michael born on Art’s birthday in 1961. While married he was drafted into the Army for two years and stationed in Germany.
After discharge from the Army, Art returned to work the farm next to the homestead. He married Loretta Baldwin on October 23, 1971, adding David and Brenda to the family. Years later, their adopted daughter, Jennifer joined the family. They purchased the farm and made it their home. They had dairy cows, rabbits, and horses; and raised tobacco. He enjoyed the children’s’ athletic, music 4-H, and horse competitions.
After selling the herd Art went to work for Casper Brothers and then established his own business, Paulman Sand and Gravel. When he had heart surgery, he gave up the business and started driving truck for Sun Prairie Sand and Gravel, retiring at 70.
Art always had a garden and took care of his lawn like a golf course. Art’s hobbies included playing softball, bowling, motorcycling and snowmobiling. His grandfather, Ole Midthun, was a wood carver and later in life Art also enjoyed wood carving, wood burning and painting plaques, gardening and canning (pears, kohlrabi, pickles and V-8 juice), and playing cards at Keyeser.
Art was an active member of Bristol Lutheran Church where he was on the grounds committee; he assisted with the construction of the addition and helped wherever he was needed. He participated in the Live Nativity, with his donkey, Ernie, and stored the stable on wheels. During Covid things changed and he and Lorre went to an outdoor service at Spring Prairie, becoming members in 2022. He did travel to the Dakotas, Nevada, North Carolina, Florida, California, and finally Norway.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws Neuman and Mildred Peterson, brother-in law Lloyd Egre and nephew Bruce Egre.
Art is survived by his loving wife Lorre; sons, Michael (Carla) Paulman, David (Kimberly) Baldwin; daughters, Brenda Baldwin, Jennifer (Dan) Parkinson; grandchildren, Sean (Hyunjin) Paulman, Mark Paulman, Jacob (Jaclyn) Baldwin, Nathan Baldwin, Sam Baldwin, Christopher Baldwin, Kiane Travis, Kenton Parkinson, Kingsley Parkinson, great grandchildren, Yunjin, Dream, Lydia, Leah, Caleb, Isabella, Carter, Carson, Havanah and Andii; sister, Dorothy Egre, nieces Susan (Joseph) Krechel, Julie Egre, great niece Kristen Krechel, brother-in-law, Arnold (Doris) Peterson, nieces Vickie and Connie
