Sun Prairie——-
Polly (Sigmon) Ruff, passed away surrounded by family after a brief illness at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg on August 16, 2024. Polly was born in Jamaica Township, Illinois to her parents David and Bessie Sigmon. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: David, Preston, Barbara, Robert, Dolores, her best friend-her sister Dorothy (Dotty), and her grandson Heath Martin. She married Henry Ruff in 1981 in Madison, Wisconsin, where they moved together to Sun Prairie. Together they blended their families with 3 children from Polly: Lisa Willams (Eric), Greg Martin (Robin) and Amy Martin-Friedman (Eric) and two from Hank: Keith Ruff (Mike Adamski), and Brian Ruff. In her youth Polly lived a life full of adventure, working in DC for the US Navy as a civilian. She also attended Weber State University in Ogden, UT in the 70s where she studied social work. Polly worked and retired from the University of Wisconsin with over 30+ years of dedication. She was adored by her bosses, colleagues, and the students. She will always be remembered as someone who had wonderful stories, uplifting conversations and a smile on her face. She loved helping others. Polly was a notorious joke teller and would often call her grandkids to tell them her latest ones…her grandkids were the apple of her eye. She loved reading, talking on the phone, being on Facebook and (p.s.) you never wanted to sit next to her at Bingo because luck was a lady for her-for sure! Polly loved music, she played piano and sang like an angel. Her love of Air Supply, The Carpenters and her favorite Andrea Bocelli provided her and us great comfort over the last few weeks. She loved ART and was a beautiful painter. She also volunteered for children’s reading buddies, home hospice care, and 16 years of working as a attendant for the elections. Our mom loved UW basketball and The Packers and if we called when a game was on-we knew better to phone back. Polly was very deeply rooted in her faith with God, and was a Eucharistic volunteer for Sacred Hearts. Family was everything to our mother: she is survived by her 7 grandchildren: Kristine, Ryan, Holly, Seth, Aidan, Harry, and Pheona, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sibling, Linda (Emerson) Byrd and sister in law Marge Sigmon. She loved well and was well loved by her family. She was our confidant, our mentor, our friend, our example, and we have learned through this sad time that we all want to be better. We want to be as loved… we want to be as liked as our mother was. We will miss her so very much.
Donations can be made in memory of our mother to Agrace hospice and Sacred Hearts endowment.
