My heartfelt condolences to your family on the loss of your husband/father/grandfather/great grandfather. I remember my father (Thomas Rausch) speaking highly of Gerry's character and professionalism during their days together at the DNR in Madison. Together in heaven, they are talking forests and trees. Love and light to all of you. Ann Rausch-Gifford

Please accept my condolences during this difficult time. Jerry has been the rock for Pat, always there for his children and grand children, a stalwart life long friend and caring neighbor. It was a privilege for me to work closely with Jerry during our 5 plus years together in Madison. He knew the forests of Wisconsin like few others. His integrity and professionalism brought credibility to the diverse land owners and responsible land management entities - county forests, national forests, industrial and tribal forests throughout the state. Well done, Jerry. we'll miss you.

My thoughts are with you and your family Pat. I am one of those "young green foresters" that Jerry took under his wing and made something of. The State of Wisconsin owes him a debt of gratitude for his service. Not many left like him. Ken Sloan

We are so sorry to hear of Gerald’s passing. My wife, Jodi and I ran into him and his wife at a Perkins near East Town. He was so friendly and sharp in remembering past Foresters and zDNR events. He will be missed so much. Retired Forestry Tech, Ron Capacio

I am so so sad to hear about Jerry’s passing. He was an amazing newborn growing up. He was always so sweet and kind to talk to. Back in the early 2000’s, Jerry heard my babysitter and I outside with a (what we thought was a smoke detector) was a carbon monoxide detector. He came over to check on us. He told us what it was and when he heard we had headaches he talked us into coming over to his house so he could call mg&e. The level in the house ended being deadly. He got someone to come over and fix the leak and came over to make sure we were ok while my parents were gone. He was a very sweet, kind, generous man. I will miss him very very very much. I couldn’t of asked for a better neighbor to have grown up with. Jerry, you will be missed by my family, and I.

Jerry epitomized the term, “great guy”! So many great memories with him fishing in Canada. None better than our most recent trip in the fall of 2018 when he joined me with my other two most favorite fishing partners, my son, Chris, and my father-in-law, Gene. He will be greatly missed, but the memories of the many great times with him will live forever. It was an honor to know him!
Jenny Cain Ellestad left a message on March 13, 2021:
I spent many, many hours at the Vande Hei’s as his daughter, Ann, was one of my very dearest of friends. What I remember most about Jerry is that he was a man of very few words but, when he did say something, it was meaningful and worthy. He was first and foremost a family man and I had the utmost respect for him and the way he conducted himself. I also remember that he LOVED to spend time tinkering in the garage and working on his boat or whatever other project needed his attention. He was a man of great integrity and a fine example for his children. A wonderful, kind man that will be greatly missed. Love to all his family, Jenny
